Declaration of Fandependence: New York Yankees

Guest Blog by Meghan Butler

I have a confession to make. Long before I ever entered Yankee Stadium and caught Jeter-Fever. Before I saw the power of the pinstripes and knew the history of the Bronx Bombers, I was ….

The Day Meghan Became a Yankees Fan

The Day Meghan Became a Yankees Fan

…a Mets fan.

I know. I’ve been told many times that you “can’t switch teams!!” but let me explain: I am a New York fan through and through. One of my first professional photo shoots as a 6-month-old was in full Giants Regalia (yes everyone thought I was a boy, that’s what you get for being the only girl in a family of four kids). Whenever I was asked to name my MLB team, I’d say, “I’m a New York fan but in the Subway Series, I’m a Mets girl.” How could I not be? I am a big fan of going against the grain if only for the hell of it and it seems that everyone in the Tri-State area is a Yankees fan – even if they can’t name more than a few players on the team. Although, some to think of it, unless you live under a rock, the NYC metropolitan area is Yankee-Central, but I digress.

Anyway, my Yankees fandom started one year on my birthday. My best friend (a Mets fan) was able to get free tickets to a Yankees game and being a recent college grad, I was not about to turn down free anything.

What came next was a spiritual sports fan awakening. Walking into the House that Ruth Built, the excitement was palpable and the history that was seemingly infused into the concrete walls of the stadium was undeniable. In a sea of blue and white, I stood

a little straighter and walked with a bit more pride under my borrowed Number 2 jersey.

I don’t remember who the Yanks were playing, but it wasn’t the Mets so I obviously rooted for the Yankees that game. Sitting up in the third tier over home plate, I’ve never felt more proud to be a New Yorker in my life. And I also realized that the Yankees were my team.

I realize that there are many things to criticize about the team. They spend an un-godly amount of money. Their players may or may not use steroids. Said players may or may not have dated a certain Queen of Pop at some point. But I can honestly say, once you go Yanks, you never go back. They’re just an amazing source of history and pride. I’ve been to the new stadium a handful of times and visited the museum. It gives me goosey-pimples to see the signatures of all the MLB greats – DiMaggio, Mantle, Ruth. These are the guys who made baseball an American past-time. If you hate the Yankees, that’s fine, I get it –I used to too. And believe me, I know Yankee Stadium is expensive. I absolutely hate paying $12 for a BudLite. However, you have to respect them for being one of the best teams throughout baseball history. This season is a perfect example. To go from a mediocre season peppered with tabloid scandals to an 8-game winning streak and placing first, 2 ½ games ahead of their rivals, the Red Sox is nothing short of amazing.

So scorn me if you must, I won’t hold it against you but the Yankees are my team and I’ll gladly pay $75 for a ticket to see them whoop the Red Sox this season. Afterall, if Teixiera is allowed to hop from the Red Sox to the Yankees, switching my Declaration of Fandependence from the Mets to the Yankees isn’t so bad.

You are my daughter.

Meghan: It is nothing like, as you say, "like when you’re dating a nice enough guy (or girl) who doesn’t make you unhappy but then you meet the man of your dreams and he makes you tingly all over and see stars."

It is more like being married to a woman/man who after a few years develops a treatable form of cancer. Instead of seeing your relationship through the hard times, you leave leave your spouse to a more convenient, healthier woman/man who wont be bed ridden and is still able to take you to dinner.

"The Yankees didn’t start out being able to pay millions of dollars either, they worked for their status."

Sorry Meghan but this is BS. The Yankees got their status by playing in the biggest media market in North America. They didn't "work for" or "earn" it. Before free agency they always spent more money than other teams to scout and find young players and then were always able to outbid other teams to sign those young players.

If you want to nitpick, before they got the Babe from Boston the Giants were definitely more popular and successful. So I guess if you want to say that buying the Babe from that idiot Frazee partly earned them their status that's true but after that they were always the biggest and most successful team in New York with the most money in MLB to spend to keep their success.

Money has always has a lot to do with whatever success the Yankees had.

Tons of great comments here!

Yeah, Meghan put herself out as a lightning rod, for sure. But here's how I read it. She rooted for the Mets because that's how she was raised. When she was old enough--and cared enough--to choose for herself, she chose the Yankees.

Besides choosing the Yankees, I see nothing wrong with that!

In my life, I was raised to root for a football team, and then switched allegiances when I was of mind to decide for myself. It's not easy to do!

I don't think it's fair to disparage her Mets fandom because she moved on to a new team. The Mets weren't her #1 #1 team. Read the original Declaration of Fandependence mission...it's all about finding the one team you will have and hold til death do you part. And she did!

I posted this because it was a much different story than your normally hear.

I completely respect Meghan for making this public and taking the abuse with a wink, nod and smile!

Sports is not like politics, you don't rebel against your parents teams.

Going public with being a Yankees fan? Am I supposed to take that seriously? That is like going public with announcing you inherited a hundred million dollars.

I disagree, about the "rebelling." Most (all?) kids cheer for the teams their family cheers for. When you get to a certain point (which is different for everyone), you choose for yourself. Being born into a Mets family, but decided you like the Yankees better isn't a crime against sports and doesn't erase the meaning of the previous Mets fandom.

Thank you, that's completely true. I'd rather root for a team because they inspire that passion. And that doesn't mean I didn't follow and root for the Mets at one point, I absolutely did. This black and white fan policy is a bit strict in it's rules, is it not?

And for the record, I do think that sports are similar to politics - look at all this heated debate a sports discussion has caused...

Furthermore, at my family dinners, we're not allowed to talk baseball or politics. I'm the black sheep of the family in both instances.

Who said it is a crime against sports, I am just saying she was never a fan of the Mets anyway.

Look up the definition of fan/fanatic in a dictionary. All this supposed "decision" proves is Meghan was never really a fan of the Mets. Big deal.

Hi Meghan!

Thanks for the blog! I am a Yankees fan and not because I am from NY. I was once married to a NY'er who taught me about Yankee history and pride. I live in Ray country and am attending the Yankees/Ray game tonight. I wish I could tell you I am rooting for the home team but I am not. The Yanks have a history that brings the baseball of my youth to memory and heart. As much I understand the locals supporting the home team, the Yanks will always be MY home team.

Thanks for your support - root extra loud for me!!

Reading books does not change the fact that it is borrowed history Meaghan.

Look I get it, but I am with Eric. If a visit to Yankee Stadium made you decide you liked the Yankees more than the Mets, the reality is you were never really a Mets fan, it is never that easy in sports.

It wasn't simply a visit that changed my mind. Agreed, I was not a rabid Mets fans. I followed their games on TV and attended a few which I enjoyed. But the first visit to Yankees stadium created and insane amounts of excitement and pride I'd never felt when rooting for the Mets.

It's kind of like when you're dating a nice enough guy (or girl) who doesn't make you unhappy but then you meet the man of your dreams and he makes you tingly all over and see stars. Yes I did just compare the Yankees to a Dream Guy (Or gal in both of your cases). And feel free to make fun of me for that comparison, I know it's ridiculous.

Isn't it better that a fan be a fan because the team inspires their passion then just be a fan for the sake of being a fan? (especially where the Yankees are concerned - I agree that many people are just Yanks fans as a matter of course, I however, am not one of them).

All I am saying is this is a bit of false advertising masked as Mets vs. Yankees. Switching is impossible. The fact is you were never really a Mets fan, and that is okay.

What's your definition of a fan?

This is absolute BS. You were never a Mets fan in the first place. At best you were a casual baseball fan from New York. A true Mets fan has a deep rooted connection with the team. I was born, raised, and still live and work in Queens. I root for this team during good times and even during the times when my team is the laughing stock of baseball as it is now. I don't judge you for being a yankees fan but to call yourself a former Mets is a joke.

I was a fan in the sense that I followed them. It should also be noted that my interest in the Mets was inspired by my family. My love of the Yankees is mine alone - not shared by anyone in my family. I have a lot of respect for fans such as yourself who have that deep rooted connection to the team.

My favorite Met/Yankee story.. Was at the Stadium a few yrs ago.. great seats, 3rd base line, 5th row, 40 feet past the bag.. Waitress service which is awesome but a little pricey, especially for a family of 4.

4 guys in front of us, one of them wearing a Mets cap. They ordered 4 hot dogs and 8 beers. It came to something like $200. When they commented about the price the waitress looked at them and said "hey, this aint Shea Stadium".

Gotta love the attitude that goes with 26 World Series Championships!

It's the essence of a New Yorker (imho) - love it!

I always knew you were cool, Meghan!

Right backatcha chris :}

Ohh come on, Tex left on a point of pride - he was about to sign the contract and he said it didn't feel right. Like DiMaggio said "I'd like to thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee."

Um, did you think he would say, "I really felt good about the Red Sox, but hey, you know the Yankees offered me more money."

In all honesty, that is why the Yankees have always made me sick. That notion from the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's may have been true for those players. But the pretension from the likes of Michael Kay in today's era that Texiera actually choose the Yankees because of history and consequently the team gave him more money because of his feelings toward the Yankees, let's just say I don't buy real estate from George Bush in Iraq.

There is zero effort in being Yankee fan. Anyone younger than 40 is borrowing history, the last generation of real Yankees fans were young kids in 1977 and 1978.

You say "borrowing history" I say "respecting & appreciating it"

Believe me, I understand the ungodly amount of money they spend and I can't say I'm a fan of that but there is a pride in history. And I also agree that there are some people who are fans and don't know why - it's the same as people who vote party lines that their parents vote - but then there are those fans who follow religiously and know the stats and players and history of the field and their fandom is a show of respect for past greatness. The Yankees didn't start out being able to pay millions of dollars either, they worked for their status. If nothing else, they should be respected.

And PS I have read many books on the history of the Yankees from bios of DiMaggio to Torre's most recent book. I don't look at it as borrowing, I see it as making it my own.

Texiera did not hop from the Red Sox to the Yankees, he was offered more money and his agent is in the business of telling his clients to accept more money.

Best of luck, whooping the Red Sox, 0-8 thus far. ;)

Thanks for being objective! I'm expecting MLB fans to bring the "comment heat" but I am prepared... GO YANKEES.

PS thank you for letting me contribute, I feel like I just went to sports-confession.
